The Workshop Model
In this video, Mr. Allen discusses how he uses the workshop approach in his middle school classroom to differentiate instruction.  In a research and writing unit focusing on persuasive writing and rhetorical devices, Mr. Allen teaches a mini-lesson on writing for a specific audience, leads a self-selected invitational group, and confers with students.

Peer Conferencing
In this video, Mr. Allen uses the workshop approach, teaching a mini-lesson on peer conference strategies, then students work in partnerships to confer with each other about their writing.  Mr. Allen discusses how he has prepared students for success in this process.

Preparing Learners: Ethos, Pathos, & Logos
In this video, Ms. Langlois groups students in heterogeneous groups to participate in a jigsaw activity, identifying and analyzing the rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos.  Teaching rhetorical appeals is often used to develop critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as the serve as an entry-point for teaching the evidence- and logic-based argument writing called for by the CCSS.  Ms. Langlois reflects on the benefits of heterogeneous grouping for supporting all students, especially English Language Learners.

Interacting with Complex Texts: Jigsaw Project
In this video, Ms. Langlois groups students into homogeneous groups to jigsaw articles at different levels of difficulty in order to analyze rhetorical appeals in speeches and then share their expertise with classmates.       Dr. Walqui from WestEd discusses the importance of scaffolding quality interactions among students.
