SFUSD K-12 Research

Every year, SFUSD students engage in research during Spiral 4 of the SFUSD ELA PK-12 Core Curriculum, during which time they can tackle complex research projects that are inquiry-driven and result in the creation of new knowledge. While research is emphasized in Spiral 4, it is also important that we provide opportunities for students to engage in short or long research experiences throughout the year aligned to the SFUSD ELA Scope and Sequence.  Students need many opportunities to practice researching - systematically, and in small steps - before tackling larger, more complex research projects.

Classroom teachers and teacher librarians are encouraged to collaborate frequently to ensure that research skills are infused throughout and across the curriculum.  Conducting shorter pieces of research throughout the year supports students to gradually learn the skills that will prepare them to conduct research independently.  As students’ research skills increase, research becomes less of an activity unto itself and more of a necessary, inherent part of the learning process.
